Structure fire at Burra - 22 January 2021

At 12:54 this morning CFS crews were alerted to a fire at the old Salvation Army Hall in Kingston Street, Burra, by a 000 caller reporting a large fire in the general area.

Nine CFS crews arrived to find a fire in the rear of the building.

Due to the height of the ceilings, crews had great difficulty accessing where the fire was, and water jets were used to blast through the roof to attempt to extinguish the fire.

As the integrity of the roof structure began to weaken, firefighters began to only be able to fight the fire from outside of the building, and two specialist MFS fire trucks were requested and dispatched from Adelaide.

Substantial water damage has been done to the building, with damages expected to be approximately $300,000.

Crews will remain at the scene of the fire until later today, as firefighters ensure all hotspots in the ceiling are extinguished.

Fire cause investigators will attend the scene later today to attempt to determine the cause of the fire.
