Public Interest Disclosure

The Public Interest Disclosure Act 2018 (PID Act) establishes a scheme that:

  • encourages and facilitates the appropriate disclosure of public interest information to certain people or authorities
  • provides protections for those who make appropriate public interest disclosures
  • sets out processes for dealing with disclosures
  • ensures disclosures cannot be ignored.

Public interest information is:

  • Environment and health information – information that raises a potential issue of a substantial risk to the environment or to the health and safety of the public generally or a significant section of the public.
  • Public administration information – information that raises a potential issues of corruption, misconduct or maladministration in public administration.

The person receiving the public interest information must comply with the requirements set out under the PID Act.
