New joint emergency services facility in Maitland
Construction has commenced on a new $10 million shared SA Country Fire Service (CFS) and SA State Emergency Service (SES) facility at Maitland, strengthening emergency response for communities across Yorke Peninsula.
Co-locating CFS and SES teams at a purpose-built site will improve training and response times, particularly during bushfires, storms, and flooding callouts.
The new station replaces existing ageing facilities and will accommodate Maitland CFS, the Yorke Valley CFS Group and the Maitland SES Unit under one roof.
The site will include:
- Vehicle building: seven bays for four CFS and three SES vehicles, plus a breathing apparatus cleaning room, maintenance bench and storage.
- Operations building: large training room, offices, communications room, amenities, shared change room and kitchen.
- Storage shed: two bays for vehicles and operational equipment.
- The facility will support emergency response for communities including Ardrossan, Balgowan, Maitland, Port Clinton, Weetulta and Nalyappa.
A ceremonial sod-turning was held today at the 13,000m² site, marking an important milestone in the project’s delivery.
Construction is expected to be completed by May 2027.
Quotes attributable to SA Country Fire Service Chief Officer Brett Loughlin AFSM:
We’re proud to be starting a project that represents a significant investment in a community that has, unfortunately, experienced a number of emergencies over the years.
We’ve had great support from local CFS and SES volunteers who have helped us to design a facility that will serve the Yorke Peninsula and its community for many years to come.
The Maitland project is one of several CFS infrastructure projects planned across the state over the coming year, supporting our volunteers to keep their communities safe for decades to come.
Quotes attributable to SA State Emergency Service A/Chief Officer Kristy Phelps:
The SES is proud to upgrade facilities in the Yorke Region through this new shared site with CFS.
Our volunteers are dedicated to helping local communities in their time of need, and the new Maitland facility will better support training, preparedness and operations in high-pressure situations.
SES are always on the lookout for passionate community members to volunteer, and I encourage anyone inspired by the new build to get in touch with the Maitland Unit for further information.
