HazMat at Strathalbyn - 28 August 2026

This afternoon at around 1:30 PM, CFS volunteer firefighters responded to a Hazmat incident at Strathalbyn on the state’s Fleurieu Peninsula.

A CFS truck, command car and firefighters arrived to find a lithium-ion battery had been removed from a bus after emitting smoke. Thankfully, members of the public and staff on the bus had self-evacuated.

After liaising with a CFS Technical Operations officer, firefighters used air monitoring and thermal imaging equipment to monitor the heat of the battery and were then able to take quick action to cool the battery and prevent further injuries.

SAAS supported crews on scene. SAAS treated one person for minor injuries and transported them from the incident.

The battery has been made safe and handed back to the owner for safe disposal.

If you notice smoke coming from your lithium-ion batteries, please alert emergency services to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
