Fire Destroys Car and Homestead at Meningie

Just after 1:15pm this afternoon SA Country Fire Service Firefighters were alerted to a structure fire on Yarindale Road Meningie near the Coorong, south east of Adelaide.

Initially reported as a car fire by the home owner after investigating the smell of smoke and finding the car alight.

On arrival firefighters found the fire had quickly spread from the car and carport where the car was parked to the home, with fire fully engulfing the roof space and undertook defensive firefighting techniques to try and bring the fire under control.

Unfortunately the homestead on Yarindale Road has been fully destroyed, however the more than 25 firefighters from 5 appliances and 1 bulk water carrier were able to stop the fire from spreading from the homestead to a cottage and shed containing another car on the property saving approximately $100 000 of the owners assets.

Local SA Police have investigated and determined the cause of the fire to be the vehicle, dollar damage estimates have been set at $400 000 for the homestead and car.

Firefighters will remain on scene for some time as they continue to extinguish the fire and make the area safe.
