$150,000 Coober Pedy fuel tanker fire

Approximately 10 CFS volunteer firefighters on two trucks and a bulk water carrier were called to a fuel tanker fire on the Stuart Highway, about 40 kilometres north of Coober Pedy at 6 o’clock this morning.

On arrival, CFS crews found the driver of the truck and other truck drivers who had stopped to assist, had contained the blaze with fire extinguishers allowing crews to quickly extinguish and black out the fire. The fire started in the dolly, the two-wheel trailer in the middle of the truck, but the cause is undetermined.

Assistance from the truck drivers helped to save the load of the 25,000L fuel tanker, with total damage to the truck’s trailer expected to be approximately $150,000.

One lane of the Stuart Highway remains closed and is likely to remain closed for several hours.
