CFS cadets shine on the national stage

CFS cadets shine on the national stage - banner

Every year, young volunteers from the CFS cadet program compete at the annual Australian Fire Cadet Championships - a four-day event that celebrates skill, teamwork, and the spirit of service. For these teenagers, it’s more than just a competition; it’s a transformative experience that shapes their future in emergency services and beyond.

Putting skills to the test

The championships are designed to challenge cadets in practical firefighting and emergency service skills. Competitors take part in eight events, including:

  • Portable Pump Relay
  • Station Response & Knapsack Drill
  • Two Lines, Two Lengths
  • Tanker and Ladder
  • Hose and Hydrant Drill
  • Two Tanker
  • Light Tanker and Hand Tool
  • Team Challenge

Each event demands precision, focus, and teamwork - core qualities that define effective firefighting.

More than a competition

For the cadets who attended the 2025 championships in Sydney, the occasion was not only about testing their skills but also about making new friends and gaining experiences that will support them in their CFS volunteer roles.

Morgan CFS’s Shania Cooper described the experience as “a good chance to show what we’ve learned and to represent South Australia and the CFS.” Her teammate, Glacia Kroschel, added, “You come back with new skills and lifelong friends.”

Naracoorte CFS’s Piper Holmes echoed the excitement. “We train hard for the drills, and it’s exciting to see how we perform under pressure. It’s challenging, but that’s what makes it fun,” she said.

Representing South Australia with pride

For many cadets, the opportunity to travel interstate and represent their state is highlight of their CFS journey. Oakbank/Balhannah CFS’s Lachlan Gardiner called it a “a huge honour”, while Brukunga CFS’s Isabella Jabarin summed it up simply - “It’s an unforgettable experience.”

Hamley Bridge CFS’s Lachlan Nicholls also shared his reflection. “Being from a small town, I feel proud to represent South Australia in something like this. It shows that no matter where you come from, you can step up, give your best, and be part of something special.”
