APY Lands fire may threaten community

SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is currently attending a fire burning in the Mount Woodroffe Range and Browns Pass in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.
This fire has been burning in mostly inaccessible terrain for several days and has now burnt an estimated 135,000 hectares.
CFS crews from Ernabella and Amata brigades have been patrolling the fire and working to stop the spread of the fire, when it leaves the inaccessible ranges.
Yesterday this fire jumped the Watinuna to Amata Road. Strong winds are forecast for later this afternoon (Thursday) and most of the day Friday this may cause the fire to impact local communities. These winds are expected to reach 55km/h.
CFS are working with members of the communities and roadworks crews in the area to establish mineral earth breaks around the communities which may be impacted by fire.
Community members are being asked to help prepare their properties by removing any flammable materials from around their houses. If travelling in the area please drive to the conditions as roads may be impacted by fire and smoke. CFS crews may also be working on the roads, so please consider their safety as well.
A team of firefighters and vehicles from the Mount Remarkable Group, Spencer Group, Blyth/Snowtown Group, along with brigade members from Andamooka, Coober Pedy, Marla and Mimili have travelled to the APY Lands to assist with the firefighting efforts.
