Harvesting activity concern for CFS

The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is asking grain farmers to be mindful of fire danger conditions in coming days and the risked posed by harvesting.
CFS volunteers have responded to four grass fires in the last 24 hours which have been the result of harvesting operations.
State Coordinator Phil McDonough says Total Fire Bans will be in place for much of the state on Sunday and farmers need to be aware of the harvesting Code of Practice which outlines the risks associated with harvesting and how to manage the risk.
"It's vital appropriate fire prevention measures are in place during harvesting operations and to cease harvesting if conditions are too dangerous.
"Not only can a fire be devastating to nearby communities it may also result in crop or machinery loss.
"Having adequate firefighting resources and water nearby is just one of the measures outlined in the Code of Practice.
"Operators should also practice good header maintenance by cleaning down between loads and ensure all maintenance is carried out in a timely manner."
The CFS encourages all harvesting operators to use the Harvesting Code of Practice and to use of the tips and tricks from the Grains Research and Development Corporation's 'Harvest Operations Back Pocket Guide'.
