FDS ends in four more districts

13/04/2015

The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) has announced the Fire Danger Season in the following fire ban districts Lower South East, Murraylands, Riverland and Upper South East will end at midnight on Wednesday, April 15.

Fire Danger Season in the Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Lower Eyre Peninsula and West Coast has been extended by two weeks and will finish on April 30.

This year's Fire Danger Season saw CFS volunteers fight the largest fire near Adelaide in 30 years, at Sampson Flat.

CFS Chief Officer Greg Nettleton said 3,500 CFS fire fighters fought for seven days to contain the blaze, which burned almost 13,000 hectares.

The Sampson Flat fire was only one of the thousands of incidents, bushfires, road crashes and structure fires CFS volunteers attended this season.

"I thank each and every one of our volunteers for the fantastic work done, and for their dedication during what has been another demanding Fire Danger Season."

However, as the CFS is more than a bushfire service this volunteer commitment will continue beyond the Fire Danger Season.

"The more than 13,500 CFS volunteers are trained to respond to emergencies such as structure fires, motor vehicle crashes, hazardous material spills and extreme weather incidents," Mr Nettleton said

Whist the Fire Danger Season comes to and end, the public is reminded to remain cautious when lighting fires, and if necessary obtain a permit.

The end date for the Fire Danger Season in the Adelaide, Mount Lofty Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Yorke Peninsula and Mid North fire ban districts is currently being considered and an announcement is expected shortly.
