Amata fire near APY Lands travel hazard

8/01/2013

Several fires that that have been burning in South Australia's Far North near the Northern Territory and West Australian borders is creating a hazard on roads in the area.

CFS Regional Coordinator Phil Tapscott said one of these fires located about 20 kilometres west of Amata near Wintawata on the Gunbarrel Highway is generating most of the smoke and may be of concern to people travelling in this area.

"The smoke may affect the visibility of motorists on the Gunbarrel Highway which provides access to the APY Lands and also goes through parts of the West Australian and Northern Territory borders," Mr Tapscott said.

"There is also another fire further west of Amata, about 60 kilometres from this community and five kilometres north-east of Angatja that is also generating quite a bit of smoke in the area," he said.

These fires are being monitored by the CFS but are not threatening any properties.
