Concerns over Victorian bushfire smoke

6/01/2013

Smoke from a bushfire that is still burning in Victoria continues to drift in various parts of South Australia causing concern for some residents and travellers.

The bushfire located about 18 kilometres south-east of Nelson in Victoria's south-west region has been active since Friday.

CFS Regional Duty Officer Jason Druwitt said that smoke from this fire is still present in parts of South Australia's south-east.

"The smoke was reported over a wider area across the region yesterday but today it seems to be confined to an area south of Penola and as far as Mount Gambier," Mr Druwitt said.

"On hot days such as today it's understandable why people become unsettled with the smell and presence of smoke."

Residents and travellers should be aware that the smoke could be emanating from the Nelson bushfire in Victoria but are also advised to remain vigilant at all times during the Fire Danger Season.

"If anyone is still uncertain about the smoke or they notice any flames, they should ring Triple Zero immediately," Mr Druitt said.

In other incidents, the CFS was called to a shearing shed and small grass fire this afternoon at Willalo near Boobarowie, about 70 kilometres south-east of Port Pirie.

The fire caused about $100,000 damage to the shearing and wool shed but the cause has yet to be determined.
