MULTIPLE LIGHTNING STRIKES IGNITES FIRES ACROSS SA

20/11/2012

The Country Fire Service (CFS) is continuing to work through a series of grass fires, which have been caused by lightning strikes in various parts of the State.

In the South East, multiple lightning strikes have ignited 14 fires between Reidy Creek in the north, to an area west of Mount Gambier.

A Bushfire Advice message has also been issued for a fire burning near Bray Wangolina, Clay Wells, Southend, Furner and Woakwine.

Main roads that are affected by smoke include the Main South Eastern Road, Robe-Penola Road and the Beachport-Penola Road.

Residents in these areas have been advised to activate their Bushfire Survival Plans.

There are also at least 30 fires caused by multiple lightning strikes in the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Fire crews are also attending to various fires caused by lightning in Murray Bridge, Coonalpyn, Tailem Bend and Meningie.

These fires have caused a surge in the number of Triple Zero calls.

The CFS advises callers to only dial Triple Zero to report a fire or smoke and for all other inquiries to contact the CFS Bushfire Information Hotline on 1300 362 361.
