Fire Causes $250 000 damage to Mushroom Farm at Monarto

14/11/2012

Firefighters were responded to a fire at the Adelaide Mushroom Farm on the Old Princes Highway at Monarto just after 6:15pm this evening.

On arrival crews found a pile of mulch approximately 30m x 30m x 5m high fully ablaze inside the multi-million dollar mushroom processing plant.

Regional Coordinator Andrew Patten said crews worked hard to contain the blaze in just over an hour to the western end of the processing plant stopping it from spreading further.

"The task has been made even more complex with the need to bring in front end loaders to pull the pile of mulch apart and allow firefighters to reach the seat of the fire".

Crews also had to contend with a small grassfire that was ignited alongside the pile by the fire". he said

More than 35 firefighters including crew from the SA Metropolitan Fire Service continued to work on the fire for the next several hours to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. SA Police and SA Ambulance were also on scene.
