CFS TACKLES MULTIPLE FIRES CAUSED BY LIGHTNING

5/11/2012

The Country Fire Service (CFS) is continuing to manage a series of fires, most of which have been caused by lightning strikes that have occurred in just over a 24 hour period.

CFS crews have responded to a grass fire near Gosse on Kangaroo Island near Berryman and North Coast roads.

People in the area have been advised to check their Bushfire Survival Plans.

Also a fire in Bramfield about 150 kilometres north-west of Port Lincoln continues to burn in a north-easterly direction but is posing no threat to life or property.

Seven CFS fire trucks in addition to four farm fire fighting units and two front end loaders are responding to the fire with mineral earth breaks attempting to contain the blaze.

A CFS fire fighting crew is also at Darke Peake, where a grass and scrub fire started by lightning, has swept through about 300 hectares and causing damage to a tractor, shed, water tanks, and crops with an estimated total of $138,000.

Another fire continues to burn in the Nunnyah Conservation Reserve, about 15 kilometres north of Nunjikompita on the Eyre Highway, between Smoky Bay and Wirulla on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula.

Bushfire Advice messages have been issued for Gosse, Bramfield, Darke Peak and Nunnyah.

People in these areas have been advised to follow their bushfire survival plan and monitor local conditions.

More information about bushfire incidents and changes in conditions is available on the CFS website.
