CFS urges vigilance as Adelaide, Kangaroo Island, and Mount Lofty Ranges Fire Danger Season declared
Thursday, 5 November 2026
With the final Fire Danger Season dates now confirmed for the 2026-27 season, SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is urging South Australians to ensure they are prepared for the threat of bushfires.
CFS has declared Fire Danger Season dates for the Adelaide Metropolitan, Kangaroo Island, and Mount Lofty Ranges, with the season to begin on 1 December in the three districts.
CFS Manager Prevention Authorisation and Compliance Craig Tapscott said with Fire Danger Season upon us, the community should remain vigilant and informed even on days with lower Fire Danger Ratings.
“Anyone living, working, or travelling through bushfire risk areas should know their daily Fire Danger Rating and have a plan for what they will do should a fire occur,” Mr Tapscott said.
“Our volunteers have already been responding to a number of smaller grass fires across the state and now is not the time for the community to become complacent, even on days with a lower Fire Danger Rating.”
A review of 10 significant incidents that occurred across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula, and Kangaroo Island region during the last Fire Danger Season showed all occurred on days with Fire Danger Ratings below Extreme.
The majority of these significant incidents occurred via accidental means including campfires, machinery use and faults, and slashing.
“Fire prevention is a shared responsibility, and we ask all South Australians to do their bit to help us keep the community safe,” Mr Tapscott said.
“Fire Danger Season has now begun across most of the state and all South Australians should also understand what they can and can’t do during this time and on days of Total Fire Ban.”
A permit is required for most burning activities during the Fire Danger Season or on days where a Total Fire Ban is declared. Permits may be issued by an authorised officer of a local council.
