South Australians urged to ensure they are 'Bushfire Ready' ahead of Fire Danger Season
31/10/2025
The majority of South Australia will enter Fire Danger Season (FDS) from tomorrow, a timely reminder to South Australians that now is the time they should prepare their families, properties and plans for the season ahead, because 'Bushfires Don't Wait.'
In conjunction with the start of the FDS in 11 of the state's 15 Fire Ban Districts, South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) is launching its annual Be Bushfire Ready Campaign, which reminds the community that awareness and preparation - including creating a bushfire survival plan - are key to keeping your family safe.
Recent research shows people who are aware of the bushfire risk in their area are more likely to be prepared for a bushfire and recognise the risk to their property.
CFS Executive Director Statewide Operations Brenton Hastie encourages anyone living, working, or travelling through a bushfire risk area to know the Fire Ban District they're in and to regularly check the Fire Danger Rating.
'Preparing for the FDS is a shared responsibility and we're asking the South Australian community to do their bit,' Mr Hastie said.
'Ensure you've created or reviewed your bushfire survival plan, prepared your property, and know what you and your family will do during a bushfire.'
'It is critical that all South Australians are taking the threat of bushfire seriously and preparing accordingly by knowing what they will do, where they will go, and what they will take when a bad fire day approaches.'
Emergency Services Minister Rhiannon Pearce said now is the time for South Australians to take action and ensure they've prepared themselves and their properties for the FDS.
'While CFS volunteers are always prepared and ready to respond, there is a lot property owners can do to help themselves prepare for the threat of bushfire,' Minister Pearce said.
'People who have a bushfire plan, and are ready to action it, and who have a well-prepared home, are more likely to survive a bushfire.'
'I really encourage people to subscribe to CFS warnings through the CFS website, download the Alert SA app and importantly, to be familiar with their bushfire plan.'
South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) Chief Officer Jeff Swann urged South Australians in regional centres and metropolitan outskirts not to underestimate the threat of bushfires.
'Each Fire Danger Season, MFS crews battle grassfires and bushfires on Adelaide's outskirts and in country towns, and every year, lives and homes are at risk. Make sure you're prepared and know what to do if a bushfire starts,' Mr Swann said.
'A common misconception is that bushfires only affect rural areas. In reality, fires can, and do, have devastating impacts on metropolitan communities and regional townships. No one is immune, everyone needs a plan."
'The MFS work hand-in-hand with the CFS across South Australia and stand with them to remind people in regional centres and the metropolitan outskirts to be ready. Having a bushfire plan means knowing what to do when every second counts.'
