Tooperang Grassfire

The CFS is continuing to respond to a bushfire at Tooperang, 5 kilometres east of Mount Compass in the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia.

The perimeter of the Tooperang fire is secured and the fire is not expected to break away. The fire is currently controlled after, being contained since Tuesday afternoon and has burnt through more than 685 hectares of scrub, grass and plantation.

Since starting on Sunday 18 January 2026, approximately 750 firefighters on 227 trucks have undertaken extensive work in difficult conditions and hard to access terrain to stop the spread of the fire. Crews have also been supported by firebombing aircraft which have completed 166 drops, totalling approximately 473,100 litres of aerial firefighting product.

With heightened fire weather expected on Saturday and into early next week, CFS volunteers and Department for Environment and Water firefighters will remain on scene, continuing to patrol the fireground and extinguish remaining hotspots. Firefighters will continue to work on this fire until it is deemed safe. We thank firefighters and partner agencies who have come from across the state to support with the firefighting efforts and will continue to protect the community over the coming days.

Roads are now open around this incident; however, this may change at short notice. The community are encouraged to take care when driving in the area as smoke will remain in the area over the coming days, and emergency services will be working on and around roads. People travelling along roads within the area need to exercise caution and drive to local conditions. To ensure your safety and that of firefighters and other emergency personnel who are working in the area, please do not enter the area unless necessary.

Whilst assessment has been undertaken, hazardous and falling trees may pose a risk along roadways with hot weather and strong winds predicted over coming days.
