PORT LINCOLN FIRE

ISSUED FOR PORT LINCOLN

The CFS, in partnership with MFS and National Parks and Wildlife Service, are continuing to work on extinguishing a fire burning at Stamford Drive and the waste management facility in Port Lincoln on South Australia's Lower Eyre Peninsula.

Crews are being supported by SA Police, SA Ambulance, local council, and aircraft as required.

Firefighters will be working throughout the day to extinguish the fire which has burnt approximately 143 hectares. The fire started in scrublands south of Port Lincoln and has burned towards Proper Bay, which has impacted on structures and the local waste management facility.

It is estimated that 6 structures, both industrial and residential have been impacted, however, several properties were saved due to the diligent and timely response by all emergency service personnel.

Currently thick and potentially hazardous smoke is drifting across the area and the community are urged to limit movement. If at home keep all windows and doors closed.

The CFS and MFS are deploying crews from across the state to assist on the fireground and Incident Management Team.

Milder weather conditions forecasted for the next few days is expected to assist crews in extinguishing the fire. The waste management facility is expected to burn for several days.

Proper Bay and Western Approach roads have been reopened with restricted speed conditions. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area if possible as emergency services personnel are continuing work on extinguishing hot spots and the waste management facility.
