LINCOLN GAP TYRE FIRE

ISSUED FOR LINCOLN GAP

The Country Fire Service (CFS) continue to maintain 24-hour coverage at the tyre fire in Lincoln Gap, between Port Augusta and Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula. Since the fire started on the 23 February, crews have undertaken strategies focusing on extinguishment, smoke reduction and protecting the remaining three tanks that have been left untouched by the fire.

These types of incidents are inherently complex and difficult to mitigate, especially with the tyres contained within aging tank infrastructure. From today operations will focus on the implementation of heavy machines, including the use of an excavator, with an extended arm boom used to submerge the burning tyres. Other machinery will be brought in to create levees that will assist with guiding water flow and protecting assets including fibre optic cables and the train line.

Heavy machines are expected to be in place mid-afternoon and continue working over the coming days, once the tyres start to be moved within the tanks an increase in smoke levels may be experienced. In the evening a glow from the fire may also be seen. This is considered a normal part of undertaking these operations, the community are therefore reminded to ensure you close all windows, air vents, and take caution when driving on roads near the incident.

Speed restrictions on the Eyre Highway are still in place, the public are asked to please remain vigilant and follow these limits to ensure the safety of emergency services, contractors and road users

Atmospheric monitoring in locations around the incident is continuing to be undertaken.

Monitoring is also being undertaken by Australian Rail Transport Corporation (ARTC) to assist with early identification of any issues that could affect the train line. Speed restrictions have also been put in place to ensure drivers can assess the track as they move through the area.

CFS continue to work closely with Department for Infrastructure (DIT), SA Water, Australian Rail Transport Corporation (ARTC), SA Police, SA MFS, SA SES, Local Council and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) on ensuring a safe conclusion to this incident.
