LINCOLN GAP TYRE FIRE

ISSUED FOR EYRE HIGHWAY, LINCOLN GAP

The CFS advises that crews are still attending to a tyre fire in Lincoln Gap on the Eyre Highway between Port Augusta and Whyalla.
The CFS has maintained 24 hour coverage of the Incident since it commenced on February 23rd.
CFS along with other agencies continue to review strategies to secure the tanks and protect major infrastructure such as fibre optic cables, SA Water main lines, road ways and railway lines.
Smoke will still be visible in the area and drivers are advised to close vehicle windows and air vents and to take caution whilst driving on roads near the incident. The community will continue to see changes in smoke volume during the day and may see a glow from the fire within the tanks at night. This is a normal part of undertaking mitigation activities during these types of incidents.
Atmospheric monitoring is being undertaken at sites around the incident area to ensure we identify and act upon any concerns with the atmosphere.
CFS continue to work closely with Department for Infrastructure ( DIT ), SA Water, Australian Rail Transport Corporation ( ARTC ), SA Police, SA MFS, SA SES, Local Council and the Environment Protection Authority ( EPA ) on ensuring a safe conclusion to this incident.
CFS crews, contractors and speed restrictions will remain in place over the coming days.
The public are asked to please remain vigilant and follow these limits to ensure the safety of emergency services, contractors and road users.
