Fire safety message for international visitors

SA Country Fire Service encourages international visitors to be aware of tomorrow and Friday's increased fire danger.

Visitors here for the Tour Down Under are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the CFS website and warning systems so if a fire starts near them they know what to do and where to get information.

Total Fire Bans have been declared in the Mount Lofty Ranges, which includes the Fleurieu Peninsula. Conditions are forecast to reach an extreme fire danger rating during the Tour Down Under race.

CFS State Duty Commander, Phil McDonough said tomorrow's increased fire danger means if a fire does start it will be difficult for firefighters to control those fires.

"We're calling for everyone to look at the CFS website and stay informed throughout the day in case a fire starts near you," Mr McDonough said.

"Know where you are at all times and ensure you have at least two exits from an area if you need to escape the fire.

"CFS has staff in the Tour Down Under Operations Centre to inform organisers of any fire threat, however we also need those spectators along the route to stay alert by taking notice of your surroundings."

Spectators are also warned to be wary of where they park their cars along the route. A hot exhaust pipe can cause a fire when it comes into contact with flammable vegetation.

"CFS encourages people to avoid driving a vehicle across paddocks of long dry grass and avoid parking in vegetation on roadsides and paddocks," Mr McDonough said.

You can stay informed by checking the CFS website, and listening to ABC local radio (in Adelaide area it is 891AM) for updates on any fires in your area.
