Fire Destroys Kainton Machinery Shed

At 1100pm this evening (21 January 2016) SA Country Fire Service (CFS) firefighters were called to reports of a structure fire at Kainton, near Paskerville in the upper Yorke Peninsula.

On arrival crews found a shed on Holman Road well alight and upgraded the alarm to respond more appliances, whilst getting to work to extinguish the blaze.

The more than 25 firefighters from 5 appliances, including a Bulk Water Carrier, were also supported by several local Farm Fire Units.

The fire was reported by nearby property owners who had gone to investigate hearing some loud popping sounds after a band of thunder had passed over the area.

Firefighters and Farm Fire Units managed to contain the fire in shed which measures approximately 30m x 60m within 40 minutes and ensured that any spot fires caused by the fire in adjoining paddocks were extinguished straight away due to the working relationship between firefighters and Farm Fire Units.

The shed and its contents of a number of Tractors, Trucks, Boom Sprayers, Hay and Ancillary Farming Equipment was fully destroyed by the fire.

Early dollar damage estimates has been set at $2 million dollars, the cause is yet to be determined with Fire Cause Investigators from SA Metropolitan Fire Service and SA Police attending in the morning.

Crews will remain on scene overnight to monitor the hay that is still burning and ensure it stays contained within the structure and to extinguish any hot spots.

SA Ambulance and local SA Police were also on scene.

No one was injured in the fire.
