Extreme fire danger weather - Thursday 18 December

17/12/2025

SA Country Fire Service (CFS) volunteer firefighters will be on high alert tomorrow, with Extreme fire danger forecast in 7 districts across the state due to very hot conditions.

Temperatures are forecast to reach the high 30s to low 40s across much of the state, combined with low relative humidity.

Gusty thunderstorms with little or no rainfall are possible over the Flinders and Pastoral districts, which may increase the risk of fire ignition.

Extreme Fire Danger Ratings have been issued for the following districts:

- Eastern Eyre Peninsula
- Lower Eyre Peninsula
- Mount Lofty Ranges
- Yorke Peninsula
- Upper South East
- Lower South East
- Murraylands

CFS is urging the community not to be complacent, with hot, dry and windy conditions forecast across the state and a fire currently burning at Haines on Kangaroo Island.

With elevated fire danger conditions expected, people are strongly encouraged to delay high risk activities such as harvesting, burn offs, campfires and the use of machinery or power tools.

CFS Deputy State Controller Fire and Hazmat, Brenton Hastie, said current conditions highlight how quickly fires can take hold.

"Recent fire activity, including the ongoing fire on Kangaroo Island, is a timely reminder that the risk of fire danger is already present and conditions do not need to be extreme for fires to start," Mr Hastie said.

With the festive season underway and travel increasing across South Australia, the community is reminded that fire weather can vary significantly across the state.

"We urge anyone travelling to understand the risk for the area they are in or may travel through, by checking the Fire Danger Rating for that Fire Ban District and to stay alert and informed in case a bushfire starts."

Mr Hastie said that while the warmer weather is not suitable for physical property preparation, there are still important steps people can take.

"Use the time to create or update your bushfire survival plan and make sure everyone in your household knows what they will do if a fire starts," he said.

"If it is safe to do so, move flammable items away from around your home, including from under verandas and decks, so they are less likely to catch fire."

Fire conditions can change quickly on Extreme fire danger days. CFS urges the community to stay alert, monitor conditions throughout the day, and follow advice from emergency services.
