Floor sweepings & dust fire controlled

4/03/2013

The CFS is continuing to monitor a large pile of floor sweepings and chaff-dust which is smouldering at a hay processing plant, east of Port Wakefield.

This incident at Bowmans was reported just before 2am where a fire was burning about 100 metres from the closest building.

At the height of the fire there were 18 CFS firefighters and five fire trucks that responded.

CFS crews established a fire break to protect a 2,000 tonne haystack at the plant and continue to support staff who are managing hot spots but is not generating any smoke that would cause a hazard.

The fire was caused by spontaneous combustion.
