EARLY END TO FIRE DANGER SEASON FOR KI
03/04/2014
NOTE: KI FDS SEASON ENDS AT MIDNIGHT ON FRI APR 4
The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is reminding everyone that the Fire Danger Season on Kangaroo Island will end tomorrow.
This means that fire restrictions will be lifted in this fire ban district from midnight tomorrow but the Fire Danger Season will still apply to 12 remaining fire ban districts in South Australia.
CFS State Coordinator Yvette Dowling said the decision to end the fire danger season on Kangaroo Island 25 days earlier than normal was influenced by the level of rain, soil moisture and reduced bushfire risk.
"Although this is the third Fire Ban District to end its season this week, following on from the North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral Districts, fire bans can still be imposed if weather conditions change and increase the risk of bushfire," she said.
South Australia has 15 Fire Ban Districts with the remaining 12 to end their Fire Danger Season over the next four weeks.
The Fire Danger Season places restrictions on some outdoor activities including a requirement to have a permit to light ignition of some types of fires outdoors such as camp fires or the use of spark-generating equipment such as angle grinders.
Penalties apply for failing to comply with restrictions including a $5,000 maximum fine for reckless behaviour such as discarding a cigarette butt from a vehicle.
"I encourage people to check the CFS website or call the Bushfire Information Hotline for detailed information about the end of the fire danger season," Ms Dowling said.
