So what are the attributes of these areas that give them the highest level of safety?

• They have low bushfire fuel levels;
• They are far enough away from large bushland or forest areas to eliminate the risk of spark and ember attack in all but the most intense bushfire activity;
• Bushfires are unlikely to travel into these areas due to the large buffers of established gardens and lawns, road networks and other zero fuel areas;
• There is access to emergency, health and other community services within these areas.

What are these areas like during a fire risk day?

A Bushfire Safer Settlement is a place of relative safety and as such may be used as a place for;

• people to stay in, or
• as a place of first resort for those people who have decided that they will leave high risk locations early on a bad fire weather day.
