Chemical spill in Naracoorte - 13 January 2021

At 5:06 this afternoon CFS crews were alerted to a large amount of liquid fertilizer that had fallen from a vehicle at the round-a-bout where Stuart Terrace, Smith Street and Lucindale Road intersect.

Three CFS Hazmat trained and support crews arrived to find two 1,000L containers of liquid fertiliser had fallen from a vehicle, rupturing the containers and leaking approximately 1,000L of the contents onto the road and into nearby drains.

Crews are currently attempting to limit the spread of the chemicals and will soon remove the spill.

The Environment Protection Authority are assisting with the clean-up to minimise the spread to the local area.

Traffic will be diverted in the area for several hours, with congestion also expected along the Riddoch Highway, Wimmera Highway and Lucindale Road approaches into Naracoorte.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible, as the clean-up is expected to take several hours.
