SAMPSON FLAT FIRE: UPDATE

08/01/2015

The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) has welcomed improved conditions over the Sampson Flat fire ground but expects firefighting operations to continue in the coming weeks as the area is monitored for hotspots and flare ups.

Since Friday the 2nd of January the Sampson Flat fire has burnt about 12,500 hectares northeast of Adelaide.

CFS State Coordinator Leigh Miller says the effort to contain the fire is commended but vital work continues to reduce the risk on the fire ground.

"There is still danger on the fire ground, falling trees continue to pose a threat and crews will continue to work on extinguishing hotspots often discovered in stumps and tree roots," he says.

"The rain has helped but it shouldn't be forgotten the majority of the work to contain the fire came from efforts of local and interstate fire fighters.

"An estimated 3000 emergency service and support personnel across numerous agencies have worked tirelessly over the last six days to control the fire and its impact on the community.

"We are still in a Fire Danger Season so it is paramount we eliminate any risk of a flare up when conditions become dryer early next week.

Mr Miller thanks interstate agencies who have facilitated more than 300 people to contribute significantly to the firefighting effort.

"Interstate personnel have been swift to respond with resources including: air support, ground crews and planning personnel," he says.

"Many of the interstate crews will be heading home today and we thank them for the role they have played."

CFS, Department of Transport and Local Council continue to assess the safety of all roads in the area and removal of dangerous trees.

It is expected all roads will be made safe by the end of Saturday.
