Fire Danger Season dates announced

Dates for the 2015/16 Fire Danger Season have been announced with nine regions being brought forward to start earlier than normal.

Persistent warmer-than-average conditions throughout spring have meant fuel loads across the state are dryer and there is a greater risk of bushfire.

Acting CFS Director Preparedness Operations Phil McDonough says the start dates for the Fire Danger Seasons are made in consultation with Bushfire Management Committees and land management agencies across the state.

"We consider factors such as soil dryness index, fuel curing, and climate outlook to determine when the season will start in each district," he said.

"During the Fire Danger Season restrictions will be in place on the use of fire, land holders are advised to check with the Local Council and the CFS website before lighting a fire."

Mr McDonough says the community plays a significant role in being bushfire ready.

"Bushfires can happen at any time of the year so it's important as we head into the Fire Danger Season everyone is contributing to reducing the impact of bushfires," he said.

"It's a joint responsibility and those in or adjacent to bushfire prone areas need to ensure their home is bushfire ready by clearing away excess fuels and ensuring they have a bushfire action plan in place."

Mr McDonough says CFS volunteers are well trained professionals ready to respond if needed.

"Without doubt the greatest asset of the CFS is the 14,000 plus volunteers who respond to incidents across South Australia every day," he said.
