Fire Restrictions

To help reduce the chance of bushfires occurring during summer,  and to protect lives and property, restrictions are applied to the lighting of fires by the declaration of the Fire Danger Season. CFS may further restrict risky activities by imposing Total Fire Bans at any time of the year.

The Fire Restrictions are linked to the declaration of the Fire Danger Season each year.  Each of the 15 Fire Ban Districts has its own specific Fire Danger Season dates and it is important to know what Fire Ban District you live in, or will be operating in to know what restrictions apply.

The declaration of a Total Fire Ban can be done for any time of the year and may fall outside of the declared Fire Danger Season.  A Total Fire Ban may be declared for any one, or for all Fire Ban Districts and will be released to the media on the evening prior to the Total Fire Ban day to coincide with nightly news broadcasts.

With a few exceptions, no fires can be lit in the open on a Total Fire Ban day.

Know your fire restrictions and permit requirements.
